Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Manchester United’s Luke Shaw in the summer transfer window.

According to a recent report in The Sun, Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is open to joining Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

It has been reported by the British tabloid that Shaw wants Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino to rescue him from the Red Devils.

The 21-year-old defender, who worked with Pochettino at Southampton, was recently criticised by United manager Jose Mourinho, according to BBC Sport.

The England international left-back is a promising and talented young player, but there have been fitness and injury concerns.

While Shaw does have a bright future ahead of him, Phil Neville’s comments about him should serve as warning to Tottenham if they are planning to make a move for him in the summer.

Former United defender Neville, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, has suggested that there is something fundamentally wrong with the former Southampton youngster.

“When Luke Shaw signed for Manchester United I was probably involved in the process of scouting him and recommending him as a player because I thought he would be a Manchester United left-back for the next 10 years,” Neville told BBC Sport. “You would think he would be a sensational player, but he just hasn’t done it.

“I know he’s suffered an injury but there must be something fundamentally wrong if the manager is questioning your attitude, training performances, desire.

“That from a 21-year-old with the world at your feet, you think maybe this is the last throw of the dice from Jose to try and get something out of Luke Shaw that he knows is in there.”

Shaw could develop into a superb left-back in the coming years, but Tottenham would be wise not to spend money on him in the summer.

According to BBC Sport, United paid Southampton a transfer fee of £27 million in the summer of 2014 for Shaw, who, as reported by The Mirror, currently earns £80,000 per week.

United are unlikely to sell Shaw for a loss and the player himself may not be willing to take a pay-cut to join another club.

Would it be a good idea for Spurs to pay over £25m and £80,000 per week for a 21-year-old who has not even made 50 Premier League appearances in the last three seasons?
