Phil Neville speaks on whether he would take the job as West Ham assistant manager

Phil Neville has been linked with the assistant manager role at West Ham United following Slaven Bilic’s sacking.

West Ham sacked Bilic on Monday morning following a disastrous start to the season with the club languishing in the bottom three after 11 games, as announced on the club’s official website.

Just two wins so far leaves the Hammers facing up to a relegation battle and Bilic has paid the ultimate price.

Former Sunderland boss David Moyes has been tipped to replace Bilic in East London, a decision that would prove universally unanimously unpopular with the club’s disgruntled supporters.

One of Moyes’ trusted lieutenants from his time at Everton, Phil Neville – who was a coach under him during his ill-fated spell at Manchester United – has been linked with the role as assistant manager should the Scot get the job.

That prospect also received a frosty reception from Hammers fans on social media but they need not worry according to the man himself speaking on BBC Radio Five Live on Sunday.

“Honestly, I went out for my run this morning and I had about 30 missed calls and messages off people saying I was West Ham’s assistant manager,” Neville told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I’ve heard nothing. I’m loving everything I’m doing at the moment. Eventually I want to be a manager, a number one, so ultimately I have got nothing to say in terms of I’ve heard nothing.”

When the former Manchester United utility man was pressed on what he would say if Moyes got the West Ham job and approached him to be his assistant, Neville paused and added: “I would say I want to be a number one.”

So there you have it Hammers fans, it’s not all bad news today.
