Phil Neville says Wayne Rooney will bring a winning mentality to the Everton side.
Phil Neville believes that Everton’s new signing Wayne Rooney can help the Merseyside club win their first major trophy since 1995.
Rooney returned to his boyhood club this summer after spending 13 successful seasons with Manchester United.
Neville, now turned a popular football pundit, says that Rooney would not have joined Everton if he wasn’t sure about winning trophies with the Merseyside club.
The former Manchester United and Everton defender says that Rooney will bring the winning mentality to the dressing room.
England’s Wayne Rooney
“The signing of Rooney gels it all together for Everton,” said Neville, as quoted by The Mirror. There is no way Wayne Rooney would go back to Everton if he didn’t think they were going to win things, that is for sure.
“He is a winner and will bring that winning mentality to the changing room.
“What he will also bring, that I experienced a little bit at Everton, is that there is a little bit of fear of what it takes to actually win a trophy.
“I think Rooney has big enough shoulders to spread that kind of experience in the dressing room.”
Wayne Rooney – Everton
Dave Watson was the last Everton captain to lift a trophy 22 years ago. Neville believes that Rooney, being a proven winner, can spread the experience to the side.
Ronald Koeman has made a real statement of intent in the summer by dishing out over 80 million on Jordan Pickford, defender Michael Keane, midfielder Davy Klaasen, plus forwards Sandro Ramirez and Henry Onyekuru, apart from signing Rooney.
Although Everton have lost Romelu Lukaku, who joined Manchester United, Neville believes that the new faces have helped cushion the blow.
