Phil Mickelson has spoken out following David Puig’s win at the Australian PGA Championship, sharing his thoughts on the Spaniard’s future in the game.

Puig opened his account on the DP World Tour in style, clinching a two-shot victory at Royal Queensland to make it three professional wins, adding to his pair of Asian Tour titles.

The 23-year-old began Sunday level at the top of the leaderboard and closed with a 66 to secure a two-shot victory and continue what has already been an impressive start to life as a full DP World Tour member.

Phil Mickelson took notice of Puig’s win and shared his thoughts online.

Puig has yet to win a LIV Golf event, but he has managed to make quite an impression on the six-time major winner.

The youngster becomes the first Spaniard since Seve Ballesteros in 1981 to win the tournament – two decades before he was even born.

Mickelson, who has long credited Ballesteros as his main inspiration, responded to Puig’s victory with high praise for the new champion.

“190 ball speed, short game on Seve’s level, putts as well as anyone in the game, and plays fearless every day. Same as Josele and they are together every day pushing each other to get better. The wins are just going to keep adding up for a very long time,” he wrote on X.

Phil Mickelson will hope his David Puig claim ages better than his Scottie Scheffler prediction

Mickelson is no stranger to making bold claims on social media, and he may have jumped the gun by comparing Puig’s short game to that of Ballesteros so early in the young player’s career.

In 2025, Lefty’s early-season remarks about Scottie Scheffler came back to haunt him spectacularly.

The world number one started slowly after recovering from a hand injury, leading Mickelson to predict that Scheffler would not win before the Ryder Cup.

That prediction could not have been more off the mark.

Scheffler went on an incredible run, picking up six wins including both the PGA Championship and The Open Championship.

Like Mickelson, Scheffler now finds himself just a US Open victory away from completing golf’s Career Grand Slam.

Consequently, Puig will be hoping that Mickelson’s latest comments do not make him look nearly as foolish.
