Anthony Kim’s future is up in the air after he finished inside the drop zone during the LIV Golf season.

LIV had landed what looked like a major signing when they brought Kim on board early in the 2024 season. It was his first appearance in pro golf since 2012.

He had become something of a legend during his time away from the sport, with plenty of speculation about what led to his absence. So there was naturally a lot of interest when he joined LIV as a wild card pick.

From a playing standpoint, though, it has not lived up to the hype. Kim did not register a single point during his time with LIV Golf.

Earlier this year, LIV made it clear that those finishing in the drop zone would be relegated. The decision came after criticism over players like Bubba Watson and Branden Grace retaining their spots despite poor results.

With LIV pushing for official world ranking points, the league appears ready to take a firmer approach to relegation, and Kim is one of the players affected by that shift.

Only Frederik Kjettrup finished below Kim among players who competed in all events. The California native’s best result was 25th in Dallas, which illustrates his bad form.

Still, Phil Mickelson, a former teammate in the Ryder and Presidents Cups, offered support to the 40-year-old golfer on social media.

“You’ve worked really hard and made so much progress. I know you haven’t had the results you wanted but you have so much to be proud of,” Lefty said via X.

LIV Golf should consider giving Anthony Kim a new role if he chooses to step away from playing

Kim deserves recognition for making it back to professional golf after everything he has been through. He reportedly lost interest in golf and did not even return with custom clubs.

He has been open about the challenges he faced during his absence, and just getting back on the course is something that will resonate with a lot of people.

If Kim does decide this is the end of his playing days, there’s a strong case for LIV finding him another position. Whether it is as part of the broadcast team or in another capacity, his story could still have a positive influence on the sport.

His career will always be one of golf’s great ‘what ifs’, considering how much promise he showed when he first broke through nearly 20 years ago.

While there was no fairytale finish, Kim has come a long way from where he once was, and that in itself is something worth acknowledging.
