Everton captain Phil Jagielka has told Ronald Koeman’s side to wait until 12 games into the season before assessing their start, speaking to the club’s official website.
The Blues have made a flying start to the season under new manager Ronald Koeman.
They have picked up 13 points from their first five games and currently sit second in the table behind Manchester City, who have won all of their games.
Excitement is naturally high on Merseyside with fans and pundits already questioning whether they could challenge for a Champions League place or even the title.
Jagielka, though, has insisted that assessments should not be made at this early stage.
“It’s been a while since we’ve enjoyed looking at the league table but we are not looking at other people’s results yet,” he told the club’s official website.
“If we have a look at the table 10 to 12 games in when that will give a rough idea of how everyone’s starts have gone. If we don’t do well between now and Christmas then the start doesn’t count for anything.”
It would certainly be unwise for Everton to get carried away by their superb start to the season just yet.
History shows that only seven teams have gone on to win the Premier League title after leading the table at this stage of the campaign.
Of course, the Blues are not top of the table in this instance but it shows that the campaign is a long one and that a strong start is no indicator of success.
