Everton defender Phil Jagielka has told Sky Sports that he thinks fans would love to see Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney re-sign for the club this summer.

The Toffees are expected to be busy in the transfer market again this summer, with shareholder Farhad Moshiri continuing to provide considerable investment for new signings.

Whilst a host of players have been linked with moves to Goodison Park, one of the most popular names in the media is Wayne Rooney, who could leave Manchester United this summer.

Rooney, 31, has endured a frustrating season with just 14 Premier League starts to his name, whilst he has eight goals and eight assists in all competitions.

Back in March, The Independent reported that Rooney was expected to leave Old Trafford this summer, and a move back to Everton was the most likely switch for the England international.

Rooney came up through the ranks at Goodison Park, scoring 17 goals in 77 games for the Everton first team before leaving his boyhood club in order to join United in the summer of 2004.

Now coming to the end of his 13th season with the Red Devils, Rooney has a record of 253 goals in 557 games for United, and Everton’s financial boost with Moshiri means that a Merseyside return has never looked more likely.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has now offered his view to Sky Sports, suggesting that Toffees fans would love him back, and he can see a reunion with his former England team-mate being a possibility this summer.

“You can always see him back, obviously he has made no secret that he still is a massive Everton fan,” Jagielka said. “But I’m not going to try and second guess what Wayne is going to do.”

“He’s got to finish the season off himself with the Europa League final coming up, but I’m sure the fans would love to see him back but only if it’s on the right terms and if he is going to contribute heavily next season,” he added.
