Speaking on his podcast, Athletic journalist Phil Hay has given an insight into why Leeds United didn’t end up signing Matheus Cunha.
The Brazilian was strongly linked with a move to Leeds this summer, and the journalist says that he is a player that Victor Orta had a serious look at, even going as far as to make contact with the attacker once labelled ‘extraordinary’.
However, Hay says that Marcelo Bielsa wasn’t actually a big fan of Cunha, and therefore, Leeds didn’t make the move.
What’s been said?
Hay shared what he knows about Cunha.
“Cunha was another one that Orta looked at and he made contact with him, but again, he wasn’t for Bielsa from what I can gather,” Hay said.

Right decision
Matheus Cunha is an incredibly talented player, and he’ll probably shine at Atletico Madrid, but if Bielsa didn’t want him, this was the right decision.
Marcelo Bielsa is the man who calls the shots at Leeds, make no mistake about it, and if he wasn’t a fan of Cunha there would have been no point in buying him, especially for a hefty fee.
We’ve seen before that Bielsa will simply refuse to play a signing if he’s not their biggest fan, just look at Eddie Nketiah and Jean-Kevin Augustin, they were used very sparingly at Elland Road.
The Argentine hasn’t steered Leeds wrong so far, and if he didn’t want Cunha, who are we to question that decision?
