Phil Hay has told his Athletic podcast that sources within Leeds United have played down reports that the club are closing in on the signing of Zurich and Italy attacker Wilfried Gnonto before the end of the month.
Gnonto, 18, has been in stunning form in Switzerland since swapping Inter Milan for Zurich. Clocking up 69 senior outings for Zurich, Gnonto has had a hand in 21 goals – scoring 12 goals and laying on nine assists.
Such form has even seen Gnonto break into Robert Mancini’s Italy side, already. Winning four caps, he even netted in a UEFA Nations League defeat to Germany. Reports this week claim Leeds are close to an agreement for the attacker.
That is, despite interest from West Ham. Asked about a potential move to Leeds this summer, widely-respected journalist Hay said that having spoken to Leeds sources about a move, that it is being down-played.
“The message I’ve had is playing that one down, this morning. I’m not sure that one is going to happen. He’s a good talent, Italy international already. He would fit into the profile Leeds would go for, young with potential.”

A shame, because the Zurich sensation looks like a real talent. A player that can operate out wide or up front. Gianluca Di Marzio claim that Leeds are working on a deal that might only be worth a fee between £3million and £4.2million.
Leeds are wary of bringing in a striker, although needed, as it may hinder the pathway into the first team of Joe Gelhardt. Nicknamed Joffy, Gelhardt is already a fan favourite at Elland Road and seen as the future of the Leeds attack.
That is why Gnonto might make sense. Able to play out wide, he would not directly interfere with Gelhardt’s game time. But he would provide some much-needed cover in the final third. However, it looks like a move is unlikely.
