Speaking on his podcast, Leeds journalist Phil Hay has been speaking about the deal that has finally brought Dan James to Elland Road.
The Whites paid £25m for the Welshman, and as you can imagine, there has been plenty of discussion around whether or not that represents value for money.
Hay says that Leeds see it as a deal in line with the prices that are being paid these days, stating that they believe it to be a similar deal to Aston Villa’s move to Emi Buendia or Newcastle’s swoop for Joe Willock.

“It’s a lot of money, but it’s very much in line with what you pay for domestic players of his sort of ilk. I know that Leeds feel it compares well to Willock going to Newcastle or Buendia to Aston Villa. I’m not saying that they don’t think Buendia is a very good player, but he did cost more money and they feel that it is in line.”
The going rate
£25m may seem a lot of money, but in the modern game, that’s what you’re paying for a player like James.
This is a winger who is proven at Premier League level for one of the biggest clubs in the world, and at his age, he still has a lot of room to develop.
When players like Willock and Buendia are going for over £20m and £30m respectively, then you’re going to be paying a hefty amount for someone like James, it’s just the going rate.
