Athletic reporter Phil Hay claims that Leeds are planning a new deal for Jack Harrison and intend to get the deal wrapped up soon – amid reports that both Tottenham and Newcastle were pursuing the winger in the summer.

Harrison, 25, joined Leeds in the same summer the club hired Marcelo Bielsa. He spent his first three seasons at Elland Road on loan, before a move was made permanent in 2021. He struggled to begin with, but gets better and better.

The two-time England Under-21 international has already had a hand in four goal this season. Scoring against Chelsea, he has also nabbed three assists. Little surprise, that Harrison has been attracting interest from Premier League clubs.

Reports in the summer claimed Newcastle and Tottenham were keen. Newcastle even made an offer, but Leeds were demanding as much as £60million. He has stayed at Leeds, and Hay now claims a new deal for Harrison is in the offing.

“The plan was to open talks with him after the window. I’d expect that to happen. He’s down to 12 months at the end of this season, Leeds will have to think about selling, but they’ll be in no position to maximise his value,” Hay said.

Leeds really need to tie Harrison down. Yes, his last three outings have not been as good as the first three. But the new no.11 is crucial to Jesse Marsch’s side and one of the first names on the team sheet. When he is good, he is excellent.

Had he continued his form at the start of the season in the next three games, you would have to argue for a place in the England side. Whether he has a chance, remains to be seen. Gareth Southgate picks his side on Thursday.
