The Manchester City midfielder helped Enland’s Under-17s to World Cup glory last year, alongside two Tottenham Hotspur players.
Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has told the Sun newspaper [page seven of Wednesday’s Goals pullout] that a move to Tottenham Hotspur would be “great” for current Blue Phil Foden.
Foden helped England’s Under-17 to World Cup glory last October, alongside Tottenham pair Tashan Oakley-Boothe and Timothy Eyoma, and is regarded as a future star of the game.
The 17-year-old has since made four appearances for City, and would likely have added to that tally had he not suffered ankle ligament damage before Christmas.
But according to Onuoha, who is himself a product of the Blues’ academy system, Foden should consider leaving his boyhood club if he cannot break into Pep Guardiola’s plans when he returns to action in the coming weeks.
“Foden could be Spurs’ next star and then could come back to City – that would be great for him,” said Onuoha, who is now with Queens Park Rangers. “He is certainly good enough to play but, when you have brought in a mega money player, you don’t buy him not to play him.
“It doesn’t mean Foden’s failed if he moves.”
Onuoha added: “Thinking about maybe having a 10-to-15-year career as such, you can’t really waste it. You can’t spend a year not playing if you’re fit.
“In the end he will get what he deserves, whether that’s at City or somewhere else.”
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has helped to develop a succession of English talents in recent years, including Manchester City defender Kyle Walker.
That said, Foden made three more appearances for City than Oakley-Boothe and Eyoma have combined for Spurs – although the potential arrival of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk could limit the Stockport native’s Etihad Stadium chances.
