The Sunderland manager has warned the club’s fans to expect a relegation battle.

Former Sunderland defender Phil Babb has criticised David Moyes to Sky Sports, saying his comments about relegation were a faux pas.
Moyes took over at the Stadium of Light this summer when Sam Allardyce departed to take charge of England.
He has not had a happy start to life in the North East, losing to Manchester City on the opening weekend and then losing to rivals Middlesbrough on Sunday.
That defeat to Aitor Karanka’s side led to the Scot making some surprising comments after the game, in which he warned Sunderland fans to be ready for another relegation battle.

He has been widely criticised for those remarks since and Babb has admitted he thinks they were a faux pas.
“I’m in the camp where I don’t think he should have said that. A manager saying relegation so early on in the season is a bit of a faux pas,” he told Sky Sports.

It remains to be seen whether Moyes’ comments prove to be correct ones across this season.
On the evidence so far, it is easy to imagine that they will struggle once more, with their current squad looking short, especially after losing Younes Kaboul.
However, with the transfer window still open more additions could change that outlook considerably and it will be interesting to see if it Moyes manages to get the signings they need.
