As Napoli were crowned Serie A champions on Thursday night, Victor Osimhen, who has been linked with a transfer to Arsenal broke a record set by Samuel Eto’o.

In March, journalist Ciro Venerato had reported that Mikel Arteta was a huge admirer of the £41 million (Football Italia) man.

Unsurprisingly, the Arsenal boss has a brilliant eye for talent, especially in the transfer market as Victor Osimhen has now gone on to shatter a record set by Samuel Eto’o.

Which Eto’o record did Arsenal-linked Osimhen break?

Branded as a ‘phenomenon’ by the New Telegraph, the Nigerian No.9 has been one of Europe’s most devastating strikers this season.

So much so that the 24-year-old has been compared to the likes of Erling Haaland, Karim Benzema, Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane this campaign.

As Arsenal transfer target Victor Osimhen scored in Napoli’s title-sealing 1-1 draw against Udinese, he also broke the record set by Samuel Eto’o (21 goals) to become the highest goalscoring African player in a single Serie A season with 22 goals (via ESPN FC).

The former Inter Milan marksman initially set the milestone during the 2010/2011 campaign, which has now officially been broken.

HITC View: Osimhen would be a super coup for the Gunners

The fact that Victor Osimhen broke a record set by a bona fide legend of the game such as Samuel Eto’o shows why Arsenal and Mikel Arteta consider him as a transfer priority.

Not to suggest that Gabriel Jesus needs replacing already but it would help the Gunners both domestically and in Europe to have a lethal goalscorer at their disposal.

Especially in the Champions League where games are won and lost in transition and being clinical against the top sides is vital, a merciless striker would give them an edge that they currently lack.

However, Victor Osimhen is likely to cost a pretty penny and one awaits whether Edu Gaspar would be willing to sanction such a mega-transfer.
