Douglas Luiz to Arsenal was a major talking point toward the end of the summer transfer window.

The Gunners tried and failed to lure Luiz from Aston Villa and had a number of offers rejected on deadline day.

Earlier in October, The Sun – as covered by HITC Sport – reported that Arsenal would be going back for the Brazilian midfielder in January.

But that could become more complicated now after the Villans announced on Friday that the player had signed a contract extension.

Interestingly, Luigi Gaspar, son of Arsenal technical director Edu, was among those to wish him congratulations.

Gaspar responded to Luiz’s Instagram post by writing ‘Phenomenon’.

Could Arsenal still sign him?

In a nutshell, yes.

Despite signing a new deal, Luiz is likely to be interested in leaving Steven Gerrard’s side.

Aston Villa are having a poor first full season under Gerrard thus far and the South American midfielder – who reportedly did want to join Arsenal during the summer – is probably still itching at the transfer, particularly with how excellent Mikel Arteta’s troops have been this season.

The North Londoners are top of the Premier League standings and Arteta is clearly building something very exciting at the Emirates.

And although Luiz could still be part of it, it’ll simply cost Arsenal a lot more money to make that happen.
