The PGA Tour is introducing another signature event to the 2026 calendar, and while it means bigger prize pools, not everyone is thrilled with the decision.
There is a feeling among some in the golf world that these events favour the sport’s biggest names. All season long, players like Rickie Fowler have been handed invitations despite their forms not justifying them.
Jordan Spieth is another player who has benefited from these changes.
Spieth is not at his best anymore, and although Gary Player once called him the top player in the game, he has not looked like that for quite some time now.
However, his profile means he still receives opportunities that others can only hope for.
And it appears not everyone on the TOUR agrees with how those invites are being handed out.
Robert Garrigus calls out Jordan Spieth over signature event invitations
There is no debate about Jordan Spieth being one of the most recognisable faces in golf.
And when he is playing well, few would argue that he belongs outside the top 10. It has just been a while since we have seen that level from him.
According to a Golfweek report, Robert Garrigus has grown frustrated with how often Spieth receives invitations to these signature events.
The issue came up when James Hahn mentioned the new event to Garrigus, who did not hold back his feelings.
“What is happening to our Tour?
“So, does that mean one more sponsor invite for Jordan Spieth? Tell Spieth I’ll play him for any amount he wants. I win, I get his five invites to the signature events.”
Spieth has not responded yet and may not feel compelled to engage. Still, some would be curious if their paths cross in person anytime soon.
