Petr Cech was left angry and annoyed on Instagram after Lukasz Fabianski had his penalty saved chalked off during Leeds United’s clash against West Ham on Friday.
Even though West Ham won the match 2-1, Leeds did open the scoring through Mateusz Klich, who had his first spot-kick saved but Fabianski was punished for being off his goal line before he put away the second attempt.
Cech claimed that it’s ‘beyond my understanding’ how keepers can be penalised for having their foot in front of the line when trying to save a penalty given the small amount of room they have, the speed in which the ball comes at them and the fact that they are trying to gain some momentum by moving in an area which has now been limited.
Liverpool’s back-up keeper Adrian, who played for West Ham, responded to Cech’s Instagram message below by simply stating ‘fully agree’.
Cech didn’t just criticise the rules but he came up with a solution himself and suggested that officials should use the spray to make a second line four feet away from the goal and that’s the area in which the penalty needs to be saved in between.
In truth, it seems as though that rules, left, right and centre are damaging the game and football just isn’t football anymore.
From what is an actual penalty in today’s game, to the handball ruling, goalkeepers having to glue themselves behind the line, what consists of a red card and the offside rule.
Every team up and down the land, including Leeds and West Ham, have both benefited and been on the end of such decisions, which is clearly taking the enjoyment out of the game.
