Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has backed Dwight Gayle for an England call-up.

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has taken to Twitter to suggest that Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle will earn an England call-up one day.

Gayle, 25, has starred for Newcastle ever since his summer move from Crystal Palace, as his tally now stands at 19 goals in just 21 league games for the Magpies.

The striker has cemented his position as Newcastle’s leading striker, with Aleksandar Mitrovic resigned to a place on the bench under Rafael Benitez as a result of Gayle’s goalscoring record.

Gayle’s superb season comes after a frustrating campaign with Crystal Palace, in which he started just eight Premier League games, scoring only three goals.

Now playing regular first-team football, Gayle is impressing for Newcastle, and could be the man to fire the Magpies back to the Premier League at the first time of asking this season.

With Gayle starring, former Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has taken to Twitter to hail the striker, who impressed so much for the Posh.

Gayle hit 13 goals in 29 games for Peterborough following a move from Dagenham and Redbridge, and that record handed him a move to Crystal Palace, which cost £4.5million according to The Guardian.

Over three years since his departure from Peterborough, it’s clear that MacAnthony still thinks highly of Gayle, with the Posh chairman predicting that Gayle will not only challenge for the Premier League Golden Boot one day, but will also earn an England call-up.

England do have options like Harry Kane, Daniel Sturridge, Jamie Vardy and Wayne Rooney available for selection, whilst players such as Marcus Rashford, Tammy Abraham and Dominic Solanke lined up as strikers of the future for England, meaning Gayle – though impressive for Newcastle – may face a tough challenge getting into Gareth Southgate’s plans.
