Assombalonga was signed for MacAnthony’s Peterborough before moving onto Nottingham Forest in 2014.

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has hit out at Burnley’s £8m bid for Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga, which was promptly rejected, as reported by the Daily Mail. taking to his Twitter account to label it as ‘insulting’

14-year-old Assombalonga fired in 14 goals for Forest last season in his first full season back from a serious knee injury, and Clarets boss Sean Dyche – who worked with the striker at Watford – believes he can replace Andre Gray as his lead striker.

However, Burnley’s bid for Assombalonga was rejected instantly by Forest, and with good reason too considering that Assombalonga’s contract expires in 2021, he has the world at his feet in regards to potential, and his current ability has made him indispensable to Mark Warburton’s side.

When informed on Twitter about the bid, MacAnthony – who signed for Peterborough in 2013 from Watford, only to be sold a year later to Forest – expressed his shock at how low the bid was, and claimed that such a figure was ‘insulting’.

With transfer fees as ludicrous as ever these days, it would be perfectly understandable for Forest to demand £15m for their prize asset, and it would be just as understandable if the Reds were furious with how low the bid actually was.

Coincidentally, Forest will meet Burnley in a pre-season friendly at The City Ground, in what may now be a rather frosty affair both off the field and between the two dugouts given the nature of the bid involved.
