The prolific Posh striker says he wasn’t given much of a chance by the Magpies, who are struggling for goals this season.

Former Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney has hit out at his former club, claiming he was not given the chance to impress at St James’ Park and describing it as “their loss”.

Toney joined the Magpies in the summer of 2015 as a 19-year-old but he went on to make just four appearances for the Premier League club.

During his time on Newcastle’s books, the 22-year-old had two loan spells at Barnsley, two at Scunthorpe United, and one apiece at Shrewsbury Town and Wigan Athletic.

Given he wasn’t involved in the first team last summer, Toney ultimately decided to up sticks and move permanently, linking up with League One side Peterborough United.

The 6ft 2in forward has impressed with Posh, netting 17 goals in all competitions so far, including 10 in 25 league appearances which have helped the club up into the playoff positions, in addition to five assists (Transfermarkt).

“I wasn’t involved with the first team [in the summer] so it was time for me to move on to somewhere I could get going,” Toney told Sky Sports News. “Now I have come here and managed to score a few goals.

“You need to be given the chance to prove yourself and I don’t think I was given that opportunity. But I guess it is their loss in the end.”

In contrast to Toney’s prolific form for Peterborough, Newcastle have scored just 16 goals in the Premier League this season, and although great goalscoring form in the third tier may not necessarily translate directly to the top flight, one must wonder whether they made a mistake letting him go.
