Peter Schmeichel says there weren’t that many Liverpool fans in Madrid and they were ‘very, very quiet’ prior to their Champions League exit to Carlo Ancelotti’s men on Wednesday night.

Given that Jurgen Klopp’s side travelled to Spain needing a miracle in Madrid to overturn a 5-2 first-leg defeat at Anfield, it’s understandable why fans weren’t bouncing from the rooftops.

Over the years, Liverpool have been a part of many, many amazing comebacks. Some of the best Europe has ever seen.

But if they overturned yesterday’s scoreline, then it would have gone down in history as probably the club’s best-ever and there have been some seriously special moments.

In the end, whilst the Reds huffed and puffed, especially early on, in the end, it petered out and Karim Benzema ended up scoring the only goal of the game as Liverpool suffered a 6-2 aggregate defeat – Jamie Carragher was pretty critical of a certain, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

This is what former Premier League goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel had to say before that action had unfolded, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (15/03/23 at 7:10 pm).

“It’s been fantastic,” said Schmeichel. “It’s springtime here in Madrid. It’s been 20 degrees. It’s been peaceful. Very, very quiet.

“Normally, when you go for a walk on days like this, you walk into squares around town and you see away supporters having a great time, singing and drinking beer.

“But it has been very quiet. Very subdued. Not a lot of Liverpool supporters. I haven’t seen yet. I don’t know how many have travelled.”

TIME TO CONCENTRATE ON THE TOP FOUR…

Liverpool are going to end the season trophyless and that will be a bitter pill to swallow for fans because Klopp has managed to keep the trophies ticking in recent years.

But all of that needs to be put to bed and the club now has to go all-out to try and secure Champions League football for next season.

Harry Kane-led Tottenham are the ones leading the charge, then Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are in the fight, including Roberto De Zerbi’s free-scoring and overachieving, Brighton and Hove Albion.

All in all, if Liverpool want to land the big stars during the summer transfer window, then they have to return to the Champions League for next season.
