Peter Schmeichel has dismissed the thought of Tottenham Hotspur’s new signing Timo Werner being a success at Manchester United.

The legendary goalkeeper was told that, before the 27-year-old returned to the Premier League with Spurs, he was ‘offered’ to Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.

Even though the Old Trafford-based club spent big money on Rasmus Hojlund in the summer, the youngster still needs time to settle in and that lack of attacking threat is still missing for the team.

But Peter Schmeichel is adamant that Timo Werner wouldn’t have been the answer because he isn’t the kind of player Manchester United need right now, as he told Premier League Productions (14/01/25 at 4:15 pm).

There is some merit to that because the former Chelsea man isn’t someone who plays with his back to goal or holds the ball up.

He needs feeding, put that ball in behind and he will cause havoc, it’s just a case of whether his finishing can match.

It’s pretty clear that at Manchester United, those from midfield and out wide, simply aren’t creating enough, so the Timo Werner deal, if it had happened, wouldn’t have worked.

Timo Werner offered to Manchester United

“I didn’t know that,” responded a surprised Schmeichel.

“I don’t think Werner is the kind of player Manchester United need, at this moment in time.

“We are watching all the good stuff when he is putting the ball into the back of the net. But we have also seen him, when he was at Chelsea, making bad decisions. Not scoring in positions where you are supposed to score as a striker.

“When you play in the Bundesliga. You have a lot more time and a lot more space. We are talking about small fractions. But when you play in the Premier League, the tempo is so high. The pressure on the ball is so high and it goes on. It never stops.”

Timo Werner’s Tottenham debut

Given that Werner has only started two games this season, then he faired pretty well on his Spurs debut at Old Trafford.

As per, the one-time Champions League winner was a threat in behind, missed numerous chances, but in the end, provided a crucial assist for Rodrigo Bentancur’s equaliser.

Many people gave Werner a thumbs up for his performance – and you would be right to think that because his fitness levels are nowhere near it yet.

In truth, at Spurs, the 24-goal Germany international is going to be asked to push forward at all times, there is more creativity around him, the same can’t be said for what’s being produced at Man United.
