Newcastle United have an eight-point cushion in the automatic promotion spots.

Newcastle United maintained their three-point lead at the top of the Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Cardiff City at St James’s Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies rode the crest of a wave into yesterday’s clash, having won their last six league games.

And it seemed like yet another formality for in-form Newcastle as first-half half goals from Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran helped the hosts into a 2-0 half-time lead.

Peter Whittingham pulled one back for Neil Warnock’s side on 77 minutes, but it was not enough to deny United a seventh successive Championship win.

Rafael Benitez’s men remain three points clear of second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion, but Huddersfield Town’s draw gave Newcastle an eight-point cushion in the automatic promotion spots.

Indeed, Benitez certainly looks like securing a very swift and comfortable return to the Premier League, following the club’s relegation from the top flight last season.

And one man who seems delighted with Newcastle’s form is Peter Ramage, who spent 12 years on Tyneside until 2008, and rose through the club’s academy.

They have the international break now, but a tricky visit to in-form Leeds – who broke into the playoff spots on Saturday – awaits Benitez and co on November 20.
