West Brom are linked today with making the summer switch- A good move or a bad one?
Peter Odemwingie was one of the success stories of last season, scoring 15 goals after signing from Lokomotiv Moscow.
This season has been far more mixed for him, after an early struggle with injuries.
He has netted nine times in the league so far, but five of those came in a two game blitz against Sunderland and Wolves, so take those games out and you’ve got a quite poor return in terms of consistency.
As Odemwingie is 30, and his reputation is still high, it is easy to see why West Brom may be thinking ‘Let’s cash in for him while his stock is high’- because in a couple of years due to his age his price will likely depreciate, while fans believe they have already seen the best of him.
But Andy Johnson as a replacement?
Forgive us for not being totally enthralled here.
Johnson is a year older at 31, and has struggled badly with injuries over the past few years, although appeared to be enjoying something of a mini-renaissance early in the season through Fulham’s brief Europa League run.
He will be available on a free transfer this summer and manager Roy Hodgson is clearly a fan, signing him for Fulham during his time in charge there.
Even so, Johnson in-Odemwingie out seems like a backwards step.
Wigan and QPR were linked with signing Johnson in January, but both elected to pass on a deal.
Johnson has scored just three league goals in 20 appearances for Fulham this season, hardly a strike rate to worry defences.
A move to West Brom would be a good deal for Andy Johnson, but would it be good for West Brom?
