Peter Lovenkrands’ bizarre transfer advice suggests Rangers appointment may repeat previous mistakes

The former winger could return to Rangers as a coach.

Peter Lovenkrands won two Scottish Premiership titles and three league cups during six seasons at Ibrox but, according to the Daily Mail, he may be yet to face his most difficult test at Rangers.

The publication claims that the former Danish winger is in the frame to be appointed onto Pedro Caixinha’s coaching staff as a new regime at Rangers attempts to close the cavernous gap between themselves and Celtic.

Like fellow candidates John Brown, a nine time title winner, and Barry Ferguson, a long-serving captain, Lovenkrands has a detailed knowledge of the club – something Caixinha is aiming to add to his largely foreign coaching staff.

However, you’d expect that the 37-year-old would also be utilised for his knowledge of the domestic game and his ability to identify locally-based transfer targets for next season.

Therefore, the fact that Lovenkrands only recently insisted that it would be a no-brainer for Rangers to sign his former Newcastle United team-mate, and close friend, Steven Taylor, may cause some degree of concern.

“He’s had a few problems with injuries over the years but defensively he is very strong and a player who knows his main job is to prevent the opposition scoring,” Lovenkrands told the Daily Record last summer.

“That’s something Rangers really need at the moment – somebody who can defend. They need their centre halves to be solid at the back and his experience would be a great addition to the squad.”

While few Rangers supporters would disagree with the claim that no-nonsense defenders are a badly needed, Taylor, currently plying his trade at Ipswich Town, had only played 30 league games in his last three seasons and Newcastle and would certainly follow the club’s divisive recent trend of signing out-of-contract has-beens.

As Joey Barton, Philippe Senderos and Niko Kranjcar proved, the strategy has proved more a hindrance than a help. Therefore, perhaps Rangers should think twice about hiring Lovenkrands before they repeat the mistakes of the Mark Warburton regime.
