Peter Grant claims all Rangers need to know is that Celtic are champions

Celtic beat Rangers the last time the two teams met in the Scottish Premiership.

Parkhead legend Peter Grant has stated that all Rangers need to know is that Celtic are champions amid the controversy about whether they’ll give the Bhoys a guard of honour.

Neil Lennon’s side were crowned champions for the eighth season in a row last Saturday and they travel to Ibrox this Sunday for the final Old Firm encounter of the campaign.

Leading up to the match, there was a lot of talk about whether the Gers would give their rivals the guard of honour, but that was squashed by Steven Gerrard in his Thursday press conference, as reported by Sky Sports.

Former Celtic man Grant admitted that if he was in that situation he wouldn’t give his rivals a guard of honour as he insisted the champions don’t need recognition from their rivals.

“Celtic have the champions’ medal in their hands and they don’t need Rangers to clap them on to a park to tell that you have won the title,” Grant told the Daily Record. “That’s all Celtic need – Celtic are champions and that is all Rangers need to know.

“The guard of honour issue has caused more controversy, to be honest with you. What if a Rangers player chooses not to clap his hands on Sunday? Then it will become an individual thing, the focus of attention will switch to them and it will grow arms and legs.”

“It would never have bothered me in the slightest and it won’t bother the Celtic players or manager on Sunday either. Would I like to have clapped Rangers on to the park during my playing days? Probably not!”

The last time these two teams met there were a lot of flashpoints, sending offs and off-the-ball incidents, with Lennon’s side walking away as the winners.

Despite already winning the title, Celtic will want to further mark their dominance against Rangers by beating them in their own back yard.

Not only that, they will want to take some momentum with them for the Scottish Cup final against Hearts where they are chasing a historic treble-treble.
