Stoke City striker Peter Crouch played with Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres at Liverpool.

Stoke City striker Peter Crouch has suggested in The Daily Mail that Atletico Madrid star Fernando Torres would be a good signing for Newcastle United.

Crouch played with former Chelsea and AC Milan striker Torres at Liverpool during the 2007-08 season.

Newcastle manager Benitez worked with the 34-year-old Spain international at Liverpool and Chelsea.

Torres has been quoted as saying by Sky Sports that he will leave Atletico Madrid at the end of the season.

Crouch wrote about Torres in The Daily Mail: “It will be interesting to see where he goes next. Perhaps Newcastle could be an option. He enjoyed playing for Benitez and he is a manager who could get him firing again.”

Risky signing?

Torres would be a blockbuster signing for Newcastle, who would be making a statement of intent by recruiting one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen.

The Spaniard, though, is past his prime, and it would be a risk somewhat of the Magpies having the 34-year-old to lead the line in the Premier League.

Moreover, the former Milan man may not be interested in a move to Newcastle, with Marca recently quoting Antonio Sanz, who is the communications director of Bahia – the agency that represents the striker – that Torres would move to the USA or China.
