Peter Crouch has raved about Benfica striker Darwin Nunez on BT Sport ahead of his goal against Liverpool on Tuesday night. Nunes is said to have held talks with agent Jorge Mendes over a possible move to Tottenham.
Still only 22, Uruguay international Nunez netted his 28th goal of the season against Liverpool – but the Reds cruised to a 3-1 first-leg win in Portugal. Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz got the goals for the Reds.
Nunez is being strongly linked with a move to the Premier League and Spurs are not the only club considered a potential suitor. But The Athletic recently claimed that Mendes has spoken to Nunez about Tottenham.
Indeed, Mendes has also held talks with Tammy Abraham – in case Harry Kane departs. Ex-Spurs striker Crouch gave his verdict on Nunez ahead of the game against Liverpool – as quoted by Football London.
“Suarez and Cavani, he plays up front with them for Uruguay. He’s got something like 27 goals in all competitions,” Crouch said. “He’s obviously going to be a big threat. Set pieces as well, he’s good in the air.”
Crouch on Nunez: £65m star enough to replace Kane at Tottenham?
Firstly, it is looking more and more likely that England skipper Kane will stay at Spurs. Antonio Conte is getting the best out of his side and a top-four finish will surely see Kane stay at his boyhood club for another season.
Manchester City are much more likely to sign Erling Haaland – son of former City star Alf Inge Haaland, than Kane. Where else could he realistically go? Manchester United would be a sideways move for Kane.
Nunez is a top, top striker with plenty of different qualities – and at 22, he is a real prospect. No, he is not enough to replace Kane – not one player is. But for £65million (90Min), Nunez should be top of the list, if Kane does go.
