Newcastle legend Peter Beardsley says the club have a lot of faith in young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, speaking to nufc.co.uk.
The 19-year-old has recently returned from international duty, making his England Under-21s debut in the 1-0 win over Kazakhstan, keeping a clean sheet on his first Under-21s start. Newcastle’s Under-23s coach Beardsley has spoken highly of the stopper, who has had loan spells at Hartlepool and Crawley.

“The club have got faith in Freddie because they gave him a four-year contract,” Beardsley told nufc.co.uk.
“It’s great for him to be part of the 21s and to make his debut.”
A ringing endorsement from a footballing legend like Beardsley will have done Woodman’s confidence wonders, who is still waiting for a chance to shine in black and white.

It does not seem as though the goalkeeper will get a chance this season at Newcastle, with three top goalkeepers all vying for the number one spot, as Rob Elliot continues his comeback from injury to compete with Karl Darlow and Matz Sels.
Woodman may need to go away on loan again, build up his reputation further and gain more first team experience in hope that he can impress manager Rafael Benitez.
Like Beardsley said, the fact that he was given a long contract by the club shows how highly they think of him, but Newcastle need to ensure his development does not stagnate by being restricted to Under-23s football on Tyneside.
