Jack Colback and Henri Saivet were both praised after Newcastle United under-23s’ defeat to Wolves at St James’ Park.
Peter Beardsley has heaped praise upon both Jack Colback and Henri Saivet due to their attitudes after they both played in Newcastle’s under-23 side’s defeat to Wolves on Monday night, the Chronicle reports.
Both Colback and Saivet have been frozen out by Rafa Benitez this season, with the former not featuring at all this term while Saivet’s only appearance came in the League Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest back in August.
The pair were both in Beardsley’s squad for the clash with Wolves, but were unable to help the side avoid a narrow defeat against the Molineux outfit. But the under-23 boss was still full of praise for the pair, suggesting that they had both opted to stay on the pitch when asked if they wanted to come off.
“For the last 30 minutes Jack and Henri could not have done any more,” he told the Chronicle.
“All we ask is that they’re a good example, as Jonjo was two weeks ago. That is what we look for from them. They were probably the big pluses where the younger ones are feeling frustrated.
“I asked both Jack and Henri if they wanted to come off but they wanted to stay on.”
While they are clearly so far down the pecking order for the first-team that Benitez may have no intention of recalling them anytime soon, their respective attitudes will surely do their chances of getting back into the side no harm at all.
The Premier League season can stretch squads so Benitez may listen to Beardsley’s praise – especially if it becomes a regular occurrence – and think about bringing one of the pair back into the fold if the side is hit with a number of injuries during the coming months.
