Tim Sherwood has claimed that Michael Edwards’ exit from Liverpool as Sporting Director was ‘strange’ now that the club is ‘up for sale’ by owners FSG.

The former title-winner with Blackburn questioned whether Michael Edwards knew something was going to happen down the line and added that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have been ‘wonderful’ for the Merseyside club, as he told Sky Sports News (08/11/22 at 7:05 pm).

Liverpool are sitting outside of the Champions League places after a very indifferent start under Jurgen Klopp this season, with clear signs, which fans saw before, that the squad needs refreshing.

What type of funds are available to Jurgen Klopp during the winter transfer window and then in the summer, under this ownership, remains to be seen, but in 12 months’ time, new faces could be in the Anfield boardroom.

Either way, Liverpool are on the market (The Athletic) and Sherwood spoke about the club’s future, as well as Edwards, 43, who served the club for over a decade (transfermarkt), and his recent departure.

“I think Fenway group have done fantastic since they have been there,” said Sherwood. “They have brought success to the club as well. Built a structure as well.

“I thought it was strange when Michael Edwards, the Sporting Director, left that club. Perhaps he saw something in the pipeline.

“They have been wonderful to the club. They managed to get a manager like Jurgen Klopp through the door and bring them success.

“Sometimes it’s the better devil you know than the devil you don’t. You never know who is going to come in. I am sure they are looking at the best interest of the football club, in terms of who they will sell to. But do you do that? Or is it a case of who wants to pay you the most money? Once you sell, then you are out of it, anyway.”

WILL FSG SELL TO A MIDDLE EAST GROUP?

A lot has been made about certain state-owned clubs in the Premier League or those with Middle Eastern owners, with Liverpool being in the hands of Americans for nearly two decades now.

Manchester City have utterly dominated as a result of the Abu Dhabi group, whilst Newcastle United are now around the corner with PIF and Saudi.

So, could the Reds be the next ones on the block? And how would Liverpool fans feel about it all? At the end of the day, these are going to be an interesting 12 months for those on Merseyside.
