West Ham believed they had struck a bargain when they signed Joe Hart on loan from Manchester City for the season.
The former Premier League champion and England international was a player the Hammers would have signed permanently if City let them, but it may just have worked out for the best.
Hart is yet to convince for West Ham in the early stages of the season, and just having him on loan at this stage looks like a masterstroke whether they intended it or not.
The goalkeeper has conceded 10 goals in three Premier League games, the worst in the top flight, and does not appear to have improved the team in any way.
The Mirror report that West Ham have paid a £2 million loan fee and are paying £2.5 million towards Hart’s wages this season.
That might be as rich as the Hammers should go if he does not help the team start picking up results.
Hart would cost the club a fee likely in excess of £10 million if they sign him permanently, and at this point West Ham should be glad they are just tied into paying his wages for this season, rather than the next three or four.
They can re-assess the situation at the end of the campaign, but the loan deal gives them this luxury.
Right now if they had splashed out to sign him on a permanent basis, West Ham might be worried they had made a poor investment.
