Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to snub a new contract and sign for Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur, as he told talkSPORT on Wednesday morning (28/12/22).

The former Premier League striker thinks Pickford, who is England’s number one, would be ‘perfect’ for Spurs and a player that could replace Hugo Lloris.

Pickford has less than two years left on his contract on Merseyside, with Frank Lampard’s side hovering above the Premier League’s relegation zone and Spurs sitting fourth in the table.

Over the summer, Spurs broke their club-record transfer and added Richarlison to their ranks so he could play Champions League football.

With the north London club looking for a long-term replacement for veteran star Hugo Lloris, they will need to bring in a new face sooner than later.

Pickford, who is 28 and eight years younger than Lloris, has been mentioned to make that move and Agbonlahor has backed him to do just that.

“Or does it sound like their finances aren’t in order and they maybe can’t offer the contract that Pickford wants or people are saying that has been agreed,” said Agbonlahor.

“Maybe the club hasn’t got the money to agree to that deal. Also strange for me is that you would think Jordan Pickford would be looking at moving. I am looking at his teammates and they are playing Champions League football. Declan Rice is looking to leave and play win things.

“I am sure at 28, it’s the perfect age for Jordan Pickford to be thinking ‘you know what I want to go and play Champions League football. I don’t want to be in a relegation battle’. Maybe his agent has had them convos, with Spurs who need a keeper, Lloris is getting on and maybe they are looking elsewhere. It’s strange he would want to sign a new contract. A player like Jordan Pickford isn’t signing a relegation clause in his contract. Only if the relegation clause says you lose half your wages, but I can leave for £10 million.

“I went through the top six or seven teams that need a keeper. Arsenal are fine. Man City are fine. Man United maybe could need one. Chelsea have two keepers. Liverpool have Alisson. It’s only Spurs, with Lloris, who is getting on now into his 30s. Is that a club you could see Pickford at? I think it is. He can play out from the back like the best keepers in the world. England’s number one. Great shot-stopper. He has that energy in his game. I think he would be a perfect signing for Spurs.”

CAN TOTTENHAM SECURE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOOTBALL AGAIN?

If Pickford is going to leave Everton, then it has to be to a team that’s in the Champions League.

Come the summer, it has to be asked if Spurs will be in the Champions League again and what will their own situation look like with Antonio Conte and Harry Kane.

Whilst Pickford himself has talks over a new Everton contract, things aren’t exactly sailing through for Conte and his future at the club.
