Manchester City seem to have a knack for breaking records, and Pep Guardiola’s side did it again over the weekend against Newcastle.
As per the club’s official Twitter account, the reigning Premier League champions now hold the record for the most wins in the England top-flight in a single calendar year with 34 after City’s 4-0 win in the northeast on Sunday.
Liverpool were the previous holders of the record as Bob Paisley’s side in 1982 won 33 games that year, guiding the Merseyside giants to back-to-back First Division titles in what was an iconic era for City’s rivals.
As well as the games won in a single year record, City broke another two in their high-scoring win against Newcastle on Tyneside.
The Manchester giants broke their own record for most goals in a single calendar year. Raheem Sterling’s goal against Newcastle, City’s fourth and final of the afternoon, was the club’s 106th goal of 2021.
Consequently, City also won their 18th away league win of the season, breaking Tottenham’s 61-year record for most top-flight victories on the road.
Indeed, with two games of the year left to go, City have a chance to extend all three records following their 4-0 win against Newcastle. And fans on social media are speechless with what they accomplished at St. James Park.
