Pep Guardiola has told the Manchester Evening News that Ederson was never going to play yesterday, even though Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was convinced that he would.

Klopp stated in his pre-match press conference that Liverpool were prepared to come up against Ederson in the City goal.

The Brazilian had come off during City’s Champions League match in midweek at half-time with injury.

And he wasn’t actually fit to play at Anfield yesterday, with Claudio Bravo stepping into City’s goal.

Bravo didn’t seem quite as assured as Ederson usually does, as Liverpool beat City 3-1.

And Guardiola admits that he is now just hoping to have Ederson back after the international break.

“Now he’s going to Brazil to recover there, when he comes back hopefully he’ll be fit,” Guardiola said. “Jurgen said 100 per cent he’s going to play but he could not play.”

Ederson of Manchester City uring the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Manchester City at St. James's Park, Newcastle on Tuesday 29th January 2019.

Bravo could arguably have done better with Liverpool’s third goal yesterday, although even if Ederson had been involved, the Reds would likely have won.

Liverpool flew out of the blocks on Sunday, and City struggled to cope with them, as Klopp’s men managed to take a 3-0 lead.

City did respond through Bernardo Silva, but it was too little too late, as Liverpool struck a huge blow in the title race.

Klopp’s men are now nine points clear of City in the Premier League table, with Guardiola’s side in fourth place.
