Pep Guardiola has told his pre-Tottenham press conference – as per the Manchester Evening News – that if Spurs rely on Antonio Conte 100%, then they will have success. This, after Conte spoke about the January window.

Conte spoke in the week about how he was left both frustrated and surprised at Tottenham’s activity in January. Spurs allowed Dele Alli, Gio Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Bryan Gil to go – bringing in just two players.

Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur joined and while they might be solid additions, Conte might have expected more arrivals – with four first-teamers going. Daniel Levy is often criticised for not backing his managers.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Saturday evening’s clash between Manchester City and Tottenham, Guardiola had a message for Levy. Rely on Conte 100%, and Guardiola believes Spurs will have success.

“I learn a lot watching his teams, the movement, the club rely on him 100% and his ideas. If they [Tottenham] rely on him 100% they will have success. In my first season it was tough against him,” Guardiola said.

“To be there for many time in this country, he can talk about it. We know how difficult this country is. I have incredible respect because when I watch his teams I learn something new.”

Guardiola on Conte: Tottenham need to back him, or wave goodbye

It might even be too late. Failing to bring in more than two first-team additions in January has clearly annoyed Conte. Spurs had a chance of finishing in the top four – but after three losses, that has diminished.

It is likely to be four straight losses come Saturday evening. Manchester City are on fire and Guardiola has got his side playing not only incredibly well, but just as consistent as ever. Spurs are supreme underdogs.

Failure to finish in the top four might see Conte depart less than a year after joining. If he does stay, Spurs have got to make some big signings in the summer, or they will certainly be waving goodbye to Conte.
