Arsenal fans have reacted on Twitter to Rob Holding’s comments that he had an ‘eye’ on possibly being in England’s squad for the recently concluded Euro 2020, as he told the Guardian.

The 25-year-old was part of an Arsenal side that struggled last season, especially from a defensive aspect as there were mistakes galore from many players throughout the season.

And whilst Holding might be lower down the pecking order to be selected for England, at this moment in time, the Arsenal fans have praised him for having a forward-thinking mentality.

This is what Holding had to say about looking at the England squad this summer:

“When the squads were being announced I had my eye on it,” said Holding.

“You never know, so I was looking. It didn’t happen for me this time but that’s not going to deter me or make me feel it’s never going to.”

There were some Arsenal fans who even suggested that their hard-hitting centre-back is better than Tyrone Mings and Conor Coady.

Both were selected in Gareth Southgate’s England squad that reached the final of Euro 2020, with Coady being an unused player, whilst Villa’s towering defender impressed during the first two opening games he started.

This is a big season for Holding in North London because he now has to cement his place in Mikel Arteta’s backline – and now he’s a senior player.

The club have splashed big cash on an England international in Ben White and both, if they produce strong performances, could force their way into Southgate’s plans going forward.

But a lot has to happen for them to reach those heights, including Arsenal showing progression after they declined last season by finishing outside of the European places for the first time in 25 years.
