Speaking on The Overlap, Gary Neville has been discussing Liverpool’s midfield.
The Reds have a remarkably talented squad, but the common consensus is that their weak link is their midfield.
Now, that’s not a knock on Fabinho, Thiago or Jordan Henderson, but with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold in defence and Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane up top, it’s hard for the midfield to hold that same level of star power.
However, while some may call Liverpool’s midfield their weak point, Neville actually believes that it is their strength as they have three utterly selfless and disciplined players who do their jobs brilliantly.
What’s been said?
Neville discussed the Liverpool midfield.
“That midfield by the way, people say that the midfield at Liverpool is a weakness, but I think it’s their strength. The back and the front are so exceptional, those two full-backs are forward all the time and the three up front are up there. The three in midfield, their discipline and their subservient nature to the rest of the players means they just hold everything together,” Neville said.

Do their jobs
Fabinho and Henderson will never be as dominant as Virgil van Dijk, as effective as Mohamed Salah or as beautiful to watch as Trent Alexander-Arnold, but they do what it asked of them and they do it to a high level.
Thiago is, of course, a wonderfully talented footballer with bags of flair, but even the mercurial Spaniard has been more disciplined and played his role brilliantly in this Liverpool team.
The Reds’ midfield isn’t quite as brilliant as their defence or their attack, but to call it a weakness would be doing three very good footballers a massive disservice.
