Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, James Pearce has shared the feeling from inside Liverpool after Michael Edwards announced he will be leaving at the end of the season.

The Reds’ Sporting Director will be departing Anfield at the end of the season and the transfer guru will certainly be missed.

Edwards has built up a reputation of being one of the greatest recruitment minds in football, but despite how talented he is, Liverpool feel as though they will be fine under Julian Ward.

Indeed, Pearce says people he’s spoken to expect the transition to be smooth due to the fact the overall structure will remain in place.

What’s been said?

Pearce was speaking about Ward taking Edwards’ place.

“Michael Edwards has played a part in identifying and preparing Julian Ward to take over as his successor, which says a lot about the relations remaining cordial and that gives Liverpool a lot of heart and certainly the people I’ve spoken to think the transition will be smooth. I think you have to remember, while Edwards was the head guy, the structure Liverpool have created that was so effective, that structure will remain the same with Barry Hunter and Dave Fallows on the recruitment side, Ian Graham the Director of Research and of course Alex Inglethorpe at the academy, they’re all still there,” Pearce said.

Heartening

This is an encouraging update to say the least.

Edwards is undoubtedly one of the most important figures at Anfield, and there may have been the fear that things could have fallen apart after his departure.

However, people inside the club feel as though Ward taking over will make the transition into this new era smooth, and who knows? Perhaps Ward could even do a better job than Edwards.
