Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has claimed that too many onlookers underestimate the quality Jesse Lingard has.
The midfielder is shining out on loan at West Ham, and as you can probably imagine, Wright had a number of good things to say about him in the wake of his goal against Tottenham over the weekend.
“He’s one of those players when you look at him and he’s suited to international football as well, because his movement with the ball in the last third and his ability to be able to pass it on the full run and pass it and score,” Wright said.
“We may as well give him some flowers before we go back to West Ham because what people don’t understand with what he’s doing now is the work that’s gone in with him hitting the ground running like he has at West Ham.
“People had forgotten about him saying ‘what’s happened to Lingard? He’s fallen off’ people say things about Jesse Lingard, things like ‘if he wasn’t at Man United, he couldn’t get in at West Ham’, because they underestimate the quality he has.”
Wright is spot on here.
Perhaps it’s something to do with the unbelievably high standards Manchester United players have to play to, but Lingard has seemingly been underestimated for far too long.
We’ve seen this plenty of times with Man United players who leave the Red Devils and shine at clubs with lower standards, just look at Jonny Evans who is now recognised as one of the best centre-halves outside of the traditional top six’.
Lingard has been excellent since joining West Ham, and the wider footballing world seems to finally be waking up to how good he is.
