Ian Wright has praised Glasgow Rangers striker Jermain Defoe’s fitness levels on the Wrighty’s House Podcast.

Defoe is reaching the twilight of his career now, but he has still proven his worth to Rangers this season.

The veteran forward has hit four goals in seven appearances for Rangers across all competitions.

And Wright is staggered at just how fit Defoe remains, despite his advancing years.

“People don’t realise how hard he works at his game. He’s 38 now, and he’s still as fit as a 25/26 year old,” Wright said.

“He doesn’t drink or do anything like that.

“As a guy who comes off the bench all he’s thinking is, ‘I’m going to score’.”

Defoe is at an age now where he will know that he isn’t going to start regularly at Ibrox, but he is an important player both on and off the field for Steven Gerrard’s men.

Defoe has been a great influence on Rangers’ younger players in training, and often gives them advice on how to improve.

The 38-year-old is far from finished playing yet, though, and he will be hoping to help Rangers wrestle back the Scottish Premiership title.

Gerrard’s men have made a brilliant start to the season, and already sit 13 points clear at the top of the league.

Wrighty’s House is the latest podcast from The Ringer with host Ian Wright with new episodes every Wednesday. The podcast will be available exclusively on Spotify. You can listen here.
