After recent near misses against Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield Wednesday have another chance to take maximum points off a top-six rival at Hillsborough on Friday.

It is Middlesbrough who visit the Owls this time, knowing a defeat could leave them five points adrift of the automatic positions come Saturday evening.

Such a result would pull Sheffield Wednesday level on points with the Teessiders, although Jos Luhukay’s side must win by four clear goals to move above the fourth-placed side – who have incidentally conceded just two more than that this Championship season.

Wednesday’s attacking threat is no doubt weakened by the absence of Fernando Forestieri – scorer of three goals from five league starts this campaign – who will miss the next few weeks with a hamstring problem.

Matt Penney could therefore keep his place in midfield, with Jordan Thorniley continuing in a flexible back five.

And Lucas Joao is a good bet to return in place of Steven Fletcher, after scoring twice as a substitute at Bristol City before the international break.
