Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini won’t be keeping an eye on the score at Bayern Munich this evening despite the risk of another miscalculation.
A year ago Manuel Pellegrini made an embarrassing error when he failed to realise that his side needed one more goal to top their Champions League group, but the Manchester City boss doesn’t seem to have learned his lesson.
The Chilean manager was left red-faced as his City side only beat Bayern Munich 3-2, leaving them a goal short of top spot and facing Barcelona last season.
Tonight Man City will again need to keep an eye on events elsewhere as their qualification doesn’t just depend on their result against Roma. They enter this evening bottom of their group but on five points along with Roma and CSKA Moscow.
The Premier League champions must hope for the right result between Bayern Munich and CSKA Moscow where they need the Germans to prevail.
But when asked whether he would be tracking Bayern’s match, Pellegrini insisted he would not.
“I don’t see where the complication is. We need to win,” the Manchester City tactician said in his press conference.
“We know if it is 0-0, that puts Roma in a better position. If we draw 1-1, we are in a better position than Roma, and it will depend on what happens between CSKA Moscow and Bayern.
“My mind is clear, absolutely, and it was clear last season in Munich.Maybe I was confused by the fact that 3-2 was not enough and that 4-2 would top the group, but I don’t think in this case we will have any problem.”
It is a risky strategy from Pellegrini and the Man City fans may not be forgiving if he makes a tactical blunder for the second year running because he doesn’t have all the information available.
