Footballing legend Pele has told The Scottish Sun that Celtic should feel very lucky that they have someone of Brendan Rodgers’ calibre in charge, and highlighted the work that he did with Barcelona star Luis Suarez as evidence of his ability.

The former Swansea City boss only joined the Hoops in the summer, but has already made a positive start to life at Parkhead, guiding the side to three wins from their opening three league games in the Scottish Premiership and leading them into the Champions League group-stages.

And Pele has backed Rodgers to continue that success during his tenure, and suggested that it was his work with Suarez during their time together at Liverpool that took the Uruguayan’s game to the next level.

“I think Celtic are very lucky to have a manager with the qualities of Brendan,” he told The Scottish Sun.

“Luis Suarez was a really good player when he went to Liverpool but I believe Brendan gave him great coaching, guidance and advice and made him a better player and a better person.

“Suarez was prepared well for his move from Liverpool to Barcelona after working under Brendan. Celtic have a good reputation around the world – and have a good manager.”

Despite the early signs of success, it is certainly too early to judge Rodgers’ tenure. However, the work that the Northern Irishman has done suggests that he is on the right path.

Not only have the results been promising, but he has also started to get some good form out of the players who had previously been considered to be on the fringes of the squad under his predecessor.

And while it would be extremely premature to suggest that any player within his squad could turn into the next Luis Suarez, the fact that he is beginning to help players reach that next level once again suggests that the Bhoys could soon have a very good team.
