Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has told the club’s official website that he was impressed with how James Tavernier and Daniel Candeias linked up against Marseille.

The Gers’ pre-season preparations continued on Saturday afternoon, as they faced French side Marseille at Ibrox, with the two sides playing out a 1-1 draw.

Valere Germain’s opener for the visitors was cancelled out by a superb free kick from Niko Kranjcar, with Rangers showing more promise in that game than they did in their disastrous Europa League defeat to Progres Niederkorn.

Manager Caixinha is attempting to gel all his new signings together having brought in nine new faces this summer, and one new face who impressed against Marseille was winger Daniel Candeias.

The 29-year-old wide man, who joined Rangers from Benfica earlier this summer, worked with Caixinha at Nacional in their native Portugal, and he looks to be a promising addition for Rangers.

Candeias caught the eye with his display against Marseille, showing direct running on the ball and great work rate down the right, forming a strong tandem with right back James Tavernier behind him.

Tavernier’s defensive frailties have been discussed to no end in the last two years, but he looked to have a great understanding with Candeias in terms of who was attacking and who was defending.

After the final whistle, Caixinha spoke to the Rangers official website about the pair, admitting that they combined well as they have similar characteristics – and this is a partnership that Rangers fans should be excited about.

“I think they are two players who have more or less the same characteristics and they have that sort of interaction because they understand each other,” said Caixinha. “It’s always good for you to have an offensive full-back and an offensive winger on the same side and when it comes to defending both of them are also involved,” he added.
