Rangers have been linked with a move to sign defender Ben Heneghan.

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has told the club’s official YouTube channel that he’s aware of Motherwell defender Ben Heneghan, but wouldn’t confirm whether the club are making a move for him.

The Gers look set to release centre backs Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos this summer when their contracts expire, meaning manager Caixinha will need to bring in new defensive options.

The recent 5-1 defeat to Celtic showed up Rangers’ defensive deficiencies, and the Gers have been linked with a host of centre backs over the last week ahead of the summer transfer window.

AS claimed that Caixinha wants to reunite with Santos Laguna defender Carlos Izquierdoz, the Daily Mail carried quotes from Rashid Sumaila’s agent claiming that Caixinha was seeking a deal with his former Al-Gharafa defender, whilst The Express believe that Rangers are also keen on signing Portugal international Bruno Alves.

Another link to a defender emerged on Wednesday evening, with Sky Sports claiming that the Gers are keen on Motherwell defender Ben Heneghan, but face competition from Cardiff City and Reading.

Heneghan, 23, was on the books with Everton and Stoke City before joining Chester in 2014, and his impressive performances in two years at the Deva Stadium led Motherwell to sign him last summer.

This term, Heneghan has played 40 times in all competitions for Motherwell, and he appears to have done enough to be considered by Rangers for a move this summer.

Today, Rangers manager Caixinha told the club’s official YouTube channel that he is aware of Heneghan, but wouldn’t confirm whether the Gers will make a move to sign him, joking that he needs Rangers’ media team to update him on transfer rumours surrounding the club – and suggesting that he is looking at a number of ways to strengthen his team both internally and externally.

“It’s another speculation, maybe another sort of information,” said Caixinha. “I need to tell the media guys that I’m not receiving the cuttings from the last days, so I’m not following what speculation is going on! I’m aware [of him], but I am assessing on the youth level, squad level, Scottish football and international football as well,” he added.
