Rangers were not short of offers for Josh Windass in the summer but Pedro Caixinha decided to keep him around at Ibrox.
Rangers probably wouldn’t have had too much difficulty if they wanted to sell Josh Windass this summer. The Scottish Sun claimed that Fleetwood Town, Peterborough United and MK Dons were interested in a player who endured a mixed debut season at Ibrox after earning a move from League Two Accrington Stanley.
Though Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha did something he’s been a little reluctant to do since arriving in Glasgow in March – he kept the faith.
A number of The Gers’ senior players have been dumped without a second thought by the Portuguese while even some of the club’s talented youngsters, specifically Myles Beerman, have been sidelined after a single poor display.
Windass, however, stuck around at Ibrox despite making just 21 Scottish Premiership appearances in 2016/17 – and failing to score a single goal.
Nonetheless, Caixinha stated in August that the 23-year-old has ‘huge potential’ and only needs more self-belief to realise just how good he can be, per Sky Sports. And, in the first few weeks of the new campaign, there was been a stark improvement in Windass’ performances.
The power, dynamism and goal threat that saw the Hull-born talent net 17 times in his final Accrington season has returned and Windass is now one of the most important players in Rangers’ squad, making a vital impact in a number of games this season.
Now, many of Caixinha’s decisions in his short-lived spell at Rangers have been questioned. Why, for example did he freeze out the talented Bournemouth loanee Emerson Hyndman, cast off the currently red-hot Michael O’Halloran or make Carlos Pena the club’s most expensive signing since 2012?
Few, however, could argue with his decision to keep the faith in Windass.
