Pedro Caixinha hints at new role for Rangers’ Ross McCrorie

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has made it very clear just how highly he rates young centre-back Ross McCrorie

Pedro Caixinha’s willingness to give Rangers’ youngsters a chance in the first-team has perhaps earned the manager a little extra credit from supporters who are otherwise disappointed by the lack of progress the club has made since he took over in March.

In the last seven months, Caixinha has blooded David Bates, Aiden Wilson, Myles Beerman and Ross McCrorie in the senior side.

The manager even went as far as to describe McCrorie, who made his debut in the Scottish League Cup clash with Partick Thistle in September, as potentially one of the greatest defenders in the history of Rangers (Daily Record). High praise indeed.

And Caixinha even hinted that the centre-back, who was arguably Rangers’ best player in the Old Firm clash with Celtic last month, could be used in a new role if required.

“[It’s good that] we can call the [young] players to be with us,” Caixinha said on Rangers TV. “We have Ross, who can also play out of position as a full-back if you needed.

“The boys are getting along and giving a very good response of what we want from them and they’re working hard to have their chances.”

Considering that McCrorie is a right-footed defender, the likelihood is that Caixinha sees the 19-year-old potentially as a back up option to James Tavernier and Lee Hodson if required.

And it’s this versatility that could ensure McCrorie, who has made just three senior appearances for Rangers, gets more opportunities to impress in the first team going forward.
