Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has told The Scotsman that he expects a ‘final answer’ from winger Barrie McKay about his Ibrox future next week.

McKay, 22, joined Rangers from Kilmarnock back in 2011, and looked to be heading nowhere fast after loan spells with Greenock Morton and Raith Rovers.

However, Mark Warburton’s arrival as manager in 2015 saw McKay realise some of his potential, playing a key role in the Rangers side last season with nine goals in 48 appearances in all competitions.

This term, McKay hasn’t found it quite so easy, with just four goals in 42 games, and speculation now surrounds his long-term future at Ibrox.

McKay’s contract with Rangers is due to expire in 2018, and given that the Daily Mail reported last month that the wide man has already rejected the chance to extend his deal with the club, a move could be on the cards.

The Gers may be forced to cash in this summer whilst they can still control McKay’s future, but they haven’t given up hope of keeping him at Ibrox just yet.

Manager Pedro Caixinha has told The Scotsman that he thinks McKay is a ‘nice player’, and expects a ‘final answer’ from him some time next week, with a decision on his future with Rangers seemingly imminent.

Caixinha suggested that he only wants players who feel passionate about Rangers, so he will meet with McKay and gauge just what the future holds for all parties ahead of the summer transfer window.

“Barrie is a nice guy and a nice player,” said Caixinha. “We are assessing him and next week we will have a final answer. I need to sit with him, I need to sit with the board and make one decision. It’s not a question of whether he wants to sign a new contract or not. If I felt that player or other players could stay with us or not then it is not a question of contract.”

“Maybe I could say someone is not going to remain with us and they could say they were thinking about moving. I only want people here that are loving and feeling passionate about the club, people that want to be here and win for the club,” he added.
