Report: Watford jump ahead of Burnley in efforts to sign Hull defender

Watford and former Hull City manager Marco Silva has tried to beat Burnley in the battle to sign Andrew Robertson.

The new Watford manager is trying to capture an old favourite at his former club as the Tigers’ Andrew Robertson is the subject of a fresh approach from the Hornets after talks with Burnley have stalled, reports the Sun.

The talks are suggested to have broken down with Burnley over how the transfer fee of £8 million is paid, the paper claims.

It is suggested that if Watford can agree terms with Hull and the player quickly they could well steal the left-back from underneath Burnley’s noses.

HITC has stated that the full-back had previously been linked with Liverpool and more recently with a move to Newcastle United. But Burnley have remained the favourites to make the signing on SkyBet at 6/4 on, with Liverpool at 5/2, Watford a 4/1 shot and Newcastle United at 5/1.

The Lancashire club had been wanting to sign the left-back in the January window earlier this year but Marco Silva, the then-manager of Hull blocked the move, as reported in the Daily Mirror.

The left-back is definitely in demand with the Tigers dropping down to the Championship. Fans have also been talking about him a lot on social media in the last couple of weeks.

Robertson is just one short of his 100th cap for Hull City having been at the club since signing for them from Dundee United in 2014. Before that he was a regular in Queens Park Rangers 2012-13 Championship side.

Robertson was a solid performer in the Premier League last season and made no personal mistakes that led to a goal, while he totalled 36 tackles won in 33 appearances for the Tigers. His 75 clearances were some way behind Curtis Davis’ 173, but he won 55 interceptions, which was only bettered at the club by Davis (92) and Harry Maguire (63).

Speaking about Silva earlier this year to SkySports, Robertson said: “The players didn’t know much about him when he came in. He’s a very focused man, that’s what we need at his time. In training now our intensity is much higher than it was.”

Silva clearly sees that he can get more potential out of Robertson if he can join up with him again. The signing would be Watford’s second deal of the summer after capturing Will Hughes of Derby County over the weekend.
